Canada Graduate Research Scholarship 2026



Summary:

The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship — Doctoral (CGRS D) program recognizes and supports the next generation of outstanding innovators, knowledge workers, creative thinkers, and researchers.


The CGRS-D program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of health, natural sciences and engineering and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.


By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.


Eligibilities:

To be considered for the Government of Canada Scholarship, you must:

  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons.

  • Be an international student currently enrolled in a PhD program at a Canadian university.

  • have completed no more than 36 months of full-time doctoral study (including summer semesters) by December 31 of the year you apply.

Even those enrolled in joint programs (e.g. MD/PhD, MA/PhD, MBA/PhD) are eligible, as long as the program includes a significant research component such as a thesis or dissertation.


Benefits:

The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship offers an annual grant of $40,000 per year for 36 months.
